Certificate in Developing Leadership through Emotional Intelligence

Under the direction of Dr. Richard E. Boyatzis, this high-impact sequence of development experiences develops personal leadership and coaching capability. Using Intentional Change Theory, our purpose is to create and sustain desired change. Participants develop a comprehensive understanding of EI, with emphasis on developing EI in themselves and coaching and developing EI in others.

Coursework for the Class:

A certificate is awarded after completion of each of the three (3) required courses plus one (1) elective.

Introduction to Emotional Intelligence (1-day)

Advanced Emotional Intelligence: Creating Sustainable, Desired Change (1-day)

Takes the learnings of Introduction to EI to a new level by applying EI to leadership in organizations. Learn how leaders move us, develope emotional intelligence in others and build effective networks. Using empirically-proven methods, explore approaches for coaching and developing leadership and EI.

Coaching for Intentional Development

(3.5-day program; December 10th and May 14th are half-days)

Discover how to develop leadership and Emotional Intelligence in others within your organization. Based on the Intentional Change Process, an empirically-proven framework for achieving desired, sustained, behavioral transformation. Where traditional coaching approaches focus on identifying and correcting weaknesses, this process focuses on the intersection of aspirations and strengths that propel an individual’s best performance.

This class explores the latest research performed in the field of Emotional Intelligence, including the link between EI and resonant leadership.  Through exercises and discussion, learn how to advance your development as a leader by creating and nurturing relationships of deep emotional connection that inspire and sustain leaders.

Team Leadership through Emotional Intelligence (1-day)
May 12, 2009, 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m
Learn how to put the innovative concepts and strategies of Emotional Intelligence to work in team settings.  Understand team behaviors and norms at the core of effectiveness and the tools that enable those norms to emerge.

Instructors

Richard E. Boyatzis, PhD, Professor and Department Chair of Organizational Behavior and co-author of the best-selling book, Primal Leadership: Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence. Dr. Boyatzis is a leading expert in Emotional Intelligence competencies with focus placed on leadership development among adults. His research focuses on how people develop capability and emotional intelligence throughout their lives and careers; the impact of advanced professional education on development of leadership capability, especially emotional intelligence; and the development of new assessment methods. Dr. Boyatzis earned his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Harvard University.

Diana Bilimoria, PhD, Professor of Organizational Behavior. As the author of over 35 articles and book chapters on management and human relations, Dr. Bilimoria is a recognized leader in organizational behavior. She serves extensively as an organizational consultant and management educator for private, public, and non-profit organizations. Her research focuses on corporate governance and control; women leaders, directors and entrepreneurs; adult education and learning; and organizational demography. Dr. Bilimoria received her Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Michigan.

Poppy L. McLeod, PhD, Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior, Cornell University. Dr. McLeod has conducted extensive research and consulting work involving team building and decision-making. Many of her works have been published in journals such as the Academy of Management Journal, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science and the Journal of Applied Psychology. Dr. McLeod received her Ph.D from Harvard University.

Melvin Smith, PhD, Associate Professor of Organizational Behavior.  Dr. Smith’s research and teaching focus on leadership and emotional intelligence in the workplace, as well as social exchange relationships, social networks, and the development and use of human and social capital in organizations. Dr. Smith is a certified Development Dimensions International facilitator and has provided training and/or consulting services to a number of organizations.  Dr. Smith spent over fifteen years in a series of sales/marketing management, and organization development positions with a number of Fortune 500 companies, prior to completing his doctoral work at the University of Pittsburgh’s Katz Graduate School.

Scott Taylor, PhD, Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior, School of Management at Boston University. Dr. Taylor has over ten years of experience as an organization and leadership development consultant. As a consultant, he has worked domestically and internationally with over twenty companies in a variety of industries. Some of his past clients have included American Healthways, The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Coca-Cola, KeyCorp, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Pemex Gas y Petroquímica Básica, Roadway Express, and Sherwin Williams. Dr. Taylor received his Ph.D. from the Weatherhead School of Management.
